August Bank Holiday 2003

At the hotel Nicki and I had a lovely holiday over the August Bank Holiday visiting the White Horse at Uffington, Wayland Smithy and the famous stone circle at Avebury. But for the Bank Holiday Monday we had decided to make it a Wendy day. As the weather had been wonderfully warm all week I had only packed a denim mini-skirt (one Nicki had recently bought me) but the weather that day turned out to be rather cooler and overcast. That meant that blending in was going to prove to be a little trickier than I originally envisaged.

Our first port of call all was Aldborough, a small town that was used at a location for the famous Doctor Who story 'The Daemons'. Nicki hadn't been before and I wanted to show her around. We also took the opportunity for a few photos too (though as the digital camera had given up the ghost my now it was back to film)! After a tour around the inside of the church, we headed back to the car and decided we need a little shopping.

The nearest small town was Hungerford so that is where we headed next. Having parked the car we walked into the town and investigated the shopping opportunities. Sadly, it seemed that most shops were closed for the day. We did find one clothes outlet and Nicki tried on a few tops but I didn't see anything I fancied. It did become apparent that I was wearing the shortest skirt in town. In fact we didn't actually see another woman in a skirt all day.

Lunchtime was fast approaching so we hunted out a restaurant near the canal, and went in for a meal. After our meal we went for a walk along the canal. In my usual oblivious manner I failed to notice the attention my short skirt was attracting but Nicki assured me I was causing quite a few people to look more than once. So, at the first opportunity, we left the canal side and went to look around in the nearby church. Church visits have become a bit of a habit with us these days as we like to look at the architecture and Nicki enjoys looking for dragon motifs amongst the decoration.
We needed some food shopping so we headed to the local Safeway. As we walked around, Nicki noticed we had picked up a group of young lads who seemed to be following us at a distance. That made us quicken our steps a little but they didn't approach or call out. I'm hopeful that they just liked my legs!

To round off the day we decided to visit the ancient hill fort of Barbury Castle. We had assumed it would be quite quiet up there but in fact it turned out to be surrounded by a country park, packed with people flying kites and playing various ball games. But that seemed to present no problems and we happily found our way to the fort itself and managed one snap before we ran out of film. As you can see it was pretty windy but the wig stayed on my head if not in perfect shape. And the draught around my legs was invigorating too!
Returning to the hotel after a fun day I reflected that perhaps, in future, site seeing trips might best be undertaken in jeans. But I still treasure the memories of the day.
