A Dorset Day Out

In June Nicki and I had a wonderful week in Dorset doing lot's of long country walks and choosing ,by chance, probably the hottest week of the year. In spite of this we did find time to let me have a Wendy day out too. We had rented a cottage with this in mind, thinking that the isolation would make things more relaxing. But as it turned out the cottage was rather nearer to civilisation than we'd expected. Still it was pleasant enough and I had no real complaints until we discovered that there would be workmen in the garden digging out a ditch all week! This was a pain because, having seen me in guy mode, if they then saw me in girl mode too it might raise awkward questions. Still there was no way I was missing my day out so, avoiding presenting myself at the windows whilst dressing, I got myself ready for the day. As it had been so hot I felt there would be no issues in wearing a short denim skirt and white camisole top. After all it was exactly the sort of thing we had seen other girls wearing throughout the week. Nicki was a bit concerned she had already over done the sun so opted for trousers. We'd also bought me a white cricket hat which actually looked quite girlie with all the hair I have now.

By eleven o'clock I was finally ready and, as luck would have it the workmen had disappeared, presumably for their tea break. We had decided that it would be fun to take the steam train from nearby Norton Junction to Swanage on the coast. The drive to Norton was uneventful but we arrived just as the train was leaving. A chat with the car park attendant told us we had forty minutes to wait for the next train.
Luckily, the station is very near to the village of Corfe and it's famous castle. Now we had already visited the castle the previous day but we thought it would be nice to see if from a different perspective so that's what we did, taking a few snaps whilst we were at it. Then we headed back to the station.
By now the train had arrived so we boarded it, found ourselves seats and settled down for the journey. Oh my goodness! It was like a furnace in the carriage. Even when we got going it wasn't much cooler. Still it was a new experience and the journey only lasted about thirty minutes so it wasn't too bad in the end. All the kids on board seemed to enjoy it and we did get great views of Corfe castle too.

But by the time we reached Swanage Nicki really was boiling in her trousers. So we hit the shops in an attempt to find her some nice cool shorts. After a few attempts we did just that so she was able to wear them for the rest of the day.
my it's breezyHaving had a good look at the shops but not buying anything else, we found a restaurant for dinner, just off the sea front with plenty of indirect sunlight and some pleasant shade too. Thankfully the sea breezes also meant it really was pleasantly cool. We had a nice leisurely lunch (salmon with new potatoes) and then headed down to the waterfront.

hatless and windswepthanging on to hat for dearlifeBy now the sun was beating down and even though it was pretty windy we wanted to be by the sea so we hunted for a little shade. As luck would have it we found sheltered beach with two old gentlemen sitting on it who were willing to make room for us so we could at last take a rest. I didn't feel like getting all sandy but I wanted to have a picture near the sand so I got Nicki to take these two from her sheltered position!

Next we headed up to the ornamental gardens where there were some lovely old trees which again provided us with some shade. We joined a number of other girls, who were doing likewise, and chilled out for a bit.

Nicki in her new shortsLightly boiled WendyWith an hour still to spare we decided to have one further walk around the back streets of Swanage, spotting the Tithe Barn and the water mill. Then it was back to the station. After an even hotter journey than the outbound one, we finally returned to Norton, picked up the car and returned to the cottage for a nice long bath !
